Description

After Whitsuntide in 1606, Mary being then 21, she left home with her confessor’s approval and her parent’s consent, and took a ship to Saint-Omer accompanied by Mrs Bentley to whose care she has been entrusted. She was filled with unspeakable joy at being able to at last enter upon the religious state, having so long and so ardently desired it.

The Scene

Mary and her father Marmaduke traveled from London to the port of Dover, passing through Canterbury as pilgrims.

Mary is boarding a sailing ship to cross the English Channel to Calais, France.

Women did not travel alone in those days, so Mary posed as the daughter of her chaperone, Mrs. Catherine Bentley (great-granddaughter of Thomas More).
